Plot 971 Ernie (Ernest) Carpenter (1899-1917)

Ernie was the son of Henry Carpenter, a gardener, and his wife Mary Jane (née Maydom) and was born in 1899 at Rickling Green Essex.

He became a printer but signed his attestation papers for the Army before his 18th birthday at Watford on 23rd September 1916 and was mobilised on 20th February 1917 when he was 18 years and 4 months old. He could not be transferred to the theatre of war until he was over 19.

Ernest died of meningitis at the Fort Pitt Military Hospital on 21st May 1917. He was buried at Fort Pitt Military Cemetery, Chatham, Kent.

He is commemorated on the Berkhamsted war memorial

His sister Minnie (1897-1913), and his father (1862-1950) are buried here with him. His mother, who died in Canada, is buried in Vancouver.
