Biography:
Florence Rowe
1893 –1927

Unmarked grave Florence Rowe (1894-1927)

Florence was born in 1893, the third child of greengrocer Fred Kempster and his wife Sarah (née Davis). She was baptised in St Peter’s 24 February that year.

In 1901 her parents and six of her siblings were living at 10, Red Lion Yard and Florence (Florrie) was with her maternal grandmother, two aunts and two of her siblings next door at number 11. Red Lion Yard was a near-slum and it was probably with great relief that Fred and Sarah moved to 38, Shrublands Avenue where they were recorded in 1911. The household consisted of the parents, five daughters, four sons and a lodger. Florence was a “laundry hand”

Her father died in 1915 and 10 May 1919 she married Harold Arthur Rowe, an asylum attendant at Leavesden asylum in Berkhamsted, by licence. Gwendoline Bertha was born 1 July that year.

In June 1921 the family was living at 72, Marlin Square, Abbots Langley, close to Harold’s place of work at Leavesden Hospital which was run by the Metropolitan Asylum Board.

Leslie Kenneth was born in 1923.

Florence died in January 1927, aged only 33, at her childhood home, 38, Shrublands Avenue.

Harold, who became a Chief Nurse at the asylum, married again.
