Plot 500 Frances Miriam Drage (née Young) (1887-1927)

Miriam was born in 1887, the youngest daughter of Frederick Young, a builder of 256 High Street, Berkhamsted, and his wife Emma Jane (née Kennings).

In 1917 she married Alfred Drage, born in Baldock, in Berkhamsted. Alfred was a grocer, but he had joined the Army Service Corps in June 1915.

Alfred served in a number of different war locations including France, Italy and the East and left the Army with the rank of Staff Sergeant Major.

The couple’s only child, Frances Gwendolyn, was born in March 1920 but the young family were to have little time together. Alfred died at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, Hampshire on 1 March 1921 aged 28. This was a large military hospital so presumably Alfred was suffering from some illness or injury incurred during his time in the Army.

His funeral service took place at the Wesleyan Church in Cowper Road and he was accorded full military honours.

Her marriage cut tragically short, Frances took Gwendolyn and went to live with her parents at 256, High Street.

Sadly, she died at West Herts Hospital, aged 40, on 15 April 1927. She is buried here with Alfred
