Frank Squibb (489)
Plot 489 Frank Squibb (1865-1929)
Frank was born 9 February 1865 in Chale, Isle of Wight to James and Charlotte Squibb. His father was an agricultural labourer, (although he is shown as “bailiff on Frank’s wedding certificate - possibly a little social climbing was going on.). He had an older sister and two younger brothers.
By 1881 his widowed mother was employed as a dairywoman at a farm in Brighstone, further NW along the coast from Chale. Frank was working as an agricultural labourer.
He married Alice Maud Mary Biddlecombe on 4 April 1888 in Portsea parish church. The marriage certificate shows that he was a police constable resident in Droxford, a village about fifteen miles north of Portsmouth where their daughter Alice Maud Mary was born in 1889.
In the 1891 census he was a police constable and the family lived in the police station, West Street, Havant.
Frank Henry was born in 1896 but sadly died in 1900.
The 1901 census records Frank as a general labourer living with his family at 2, Kent Terrace, Southampton. Had he been dismissed from the police, or resigned?
In 1903 Frank was employed as a dock watchman and a report in The Hampshire Advertiser for November 14th gave details of an assault on Dock Constable Sykes who was attempting to arrest a labourer in possession of brandy. He was kicked, as was Frank who came to his aid. The man was fined.
In 1911 the family was at 2, Kent Terrace, Southampton and Frank was a dock labourer. They were still at that address in June 1921 when he was a dock labourer with the London & South West Railway Company.
It is not known when the couple moved to Berkhamsted, but Frank died here 30 January 1929 and Alice in 1932. She is buried here with him.
