Unmarked grave Fred Mashford (1877-1944)

Fred (he always appears to have gone by that name and not Frederick) was born 29 November 1877 in Stanbridge, Bedfordshire, the fifth of William and Ann Mashford’s sons. He also had two sisters. His father was a sawyer who had moved his whole family to Berkhamsted at some point after 1887.

In 1891 they were living in Gravel Path and young Fred, aged just 13, was already a general labourer.

By 1911 Fred had become a furniture dealer and was living with his parents, one sister and a nephew at 27, Castle Street.

His father died in 1913

By 1921 Fred was not only dealing in furniture but was also a cabinet maker and an employer. He was still living at 27, Castle Street with his widowed mother, an unmarried sister and a nephew, who was working with him.

In 1930, aged 52, Fred married for the first time, to Jane Cable, aged 37, in Berkhamsted.

Fred died at 24, Castle Street 1 September 1944, aged 66.

His father William, his brother John and Sarah Ann, the widow of his brother George.
