Biography:
Frederick Smith

Plot 870 Frederick Smith

Frederick was born in 1856 in Okeover, Staffordshire. His father was Richard Smith, born in Oxfordshire, and Martha Gascoine, born in Whaddon, Bucks.

Okeover is a parish with no village and a very small population, close to the Derbyshire border. Richard Smith was the gamekeeper and bailiff for Okeover Hall having moved around to several positions since his marriage, as gamekeepers often did.

In 1861 the family were living in a cottage in the park of Okeover Hall. Richard is shown as a widower (Martha died in 1857) and four of his four daughters and two of his sons, of which Frederick was the younger, were living with him.

He married Sarah 29 May 1901 at All Saints Church, Knightsbridge, London. His occupation was given as “Butler”, and his address as 33, Princes Gate, as was Sarah’s. This is a prestigious road running along the southern edge of Hyde Park and it is tempting to believe they met as servants at that address.

It is not known when they moved to Berkhamsted but their son Frederick Richard Watkin Smith was born here 23 July 1908.

In the 1911 census Frederick was licensee and manager of the Swan Inn on the corner of Chesham Road and the High Street. His wife’s sister and her family were living with them and his brother-in-law, Joseph Cass, died in Berkhamsted in 1914 and was buried in this plot.

Frederick died 20 December 1919 in St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, aged 63 and was buried here with his brother-in-law.

Sarah survived him until 1934 and is possibly one of several “Mrs Smith” burials in the cemetery.
