Plot 1055 Frederick William Collins (1865-1952)

Frederick was born in Pitstone 3 July 1865, the son of Charles, an agricultural labourer, and Mary Ann (née Millins) Collins. He was baptised in Pitstone church 13 August.

Frederick was the second son and he had a younger brother and a sister. By 1871 they were living at Gubblecote in Long Marston. Two more sisters and a brother were added to the family by 1881 when young Frederick was an errand boy.

Frederick got a job as a herdsman and moved to Tring where he lodged in King Street. He married Emma Rush in Tring parish church 20 April 1891.

They were to have five children: Frederick William (1892), Frank (1894), Bertie James (1897) and Violet Gladys (1900) were all born in Tring.

In the 1901 census the family were living in Stoke Green, Stoke Poges, where Frederick was employed as a cowman on a farm.

By the time little Violet Gladys died on 6 March 1906 they were living at 12, Bridge Street, Berkhamsted. Frederick was still working as a cowman.

However, although the burial registers record this death and give the address, Violet G Collins is recorded, aged 11, on the 1911 census return for the family. Was this a mistaken belief that all children must be recorded, or perhaps a case of a grieving parent not able to come to terms with the child’s death? The question about how many children have been born alive and have since died has been answered correctly – five born, one death – and five children are listed, ending with Stanley, born in 1909.

Violet lies in plot 1024.

More tragedy was to follow when Bertie James joined the army and died of his wounds in France 19 December 1916 aged 19. He lies in Etaples Military cemetery.

In 1921 Frederick, Emma and Stanley were still living at 12, Bridge Street and Frederick was working as a general labourer at Key and Sons timber merchants. His son Frederick William jnr. was employed there as a sawyer. In 1939 Frederick snr. was still working there as a wood machinist.

Emma died on 8 October 1948  and Frederick passed away 24 December 1952 aged 87 at 30, Hazel Road and was buried here with her.

Their grandchild Olive Gladys Collier, who died aged 4 in 1924, is buried in an unmarked grave in this cemetery.
