Unmarked grave George Arthur Edward Ellis (1901-1928)

George was born in 1901 at 2, Courthorpe Road, St Pancras, London, the second son of Margaretta May (née Bevis) and Alfred Ellis. His father was a railway clerk. The couple were to have twin daughters the next year and another son in 1904. In January 1907 all the children except George were baptised at St Mark’s, Regent Park, the nearest church to their home at 7, Egbert Street, to the north of Regent’s Park. For some reason George’s baptism was delayed until 7 February.

Railway employees tended to move about the country and in 1911 the family, and Alfred’s father, were living at The Firs, Chesham Bois Moor in Buckinghamshire. All five children were at school.

In 1921 Alfred, Margaretta, George and three of his siblings were living at The Mill, Chalfont St Giles, Bucks. Alfred was still a clerk for the London and NW Railway and George was an out of work “helmet maker”, his last employer having been a hat manufacturer in Chalfont St Giles.

Alfred and Margaretta moved to Kittsbury Road, Berkhamsted and presumably George moved with them as, when he died in West Herts hospital in April 1928, aged 27, he was buried here. The funeral was conducted by the Primitive Methodist minister.
