George Grover

Unmarked grave George Grover (1863-1913)
George was born in 1863 and baptised in St Peter’s on 27 September. He was the son of John and Margaret Grover. His father was a railway labourer and he was the third of their five children and their oldest son.
In 1871 the family were living in Highfield Road.
George became a general labourer and in 1881 was living with his parents and older sister. His father was also now a general labourer and the two women were straw plaiters, a common occupation for women in labouring families.
George remained at home and by 1891, when his now-widowed father was no longer working, George and his brother-in-law Frederick Row were both general labourers supporting John, Frederick’s wife Sarah and her baby daughter.
In 1901 he was lodging at 25, High Street at the home of the keeper of this cemetery George Pearce and his family.
George married local girl Ellen Munn in Berkhamsted in 1905 and their daughter Margaret was born the next year.
In 1911 they were living at 31, Highfield Road and George was employed as a farm labourer, but things seem to have deteriorated for the family because, at the time of his death aged 49 in June 1913, they were living in Red Lion Yard, a much less salubrious address.
His mother Margaret, who died in 1882, is buried in this cemetery in an unmarked grave.
