Plot 1011 George Riach Green (1862-1943)

George was born in the parish of St Nicholas, Aberdeen in 1862 to Mary (née Riach) and William Green

In 1871 he was living with his mother and siblings in Luton Road, Wheathampstead. His father was a coachman, although not entered as being at home. His younger siblings Margaret (1864) and Alexander (1865) had been born in Stamford Hill, Middlesex. The family must then have moved to Maidstone in Kent where Harriett was born in 1867, then to Wheathampstead where Albert (1869) and Alice (1870) were born.

In 1881 George was living with his mother at Berry Green Wheathampstead. Mary is shown as married, although William was not at home. Since the previous census Ezra and Sydney had been added to the family and she was working as a laundress. George, aged 18, was a pupil teacher.

George was employed as a teacher in Royston National Schools by 1891. He lodged in Baldock Street in the home of Miss Ashman who also had another young man, an auctioneer’s clerk, lodging.

George married Agnes Course, the daughter of a Royston tailor, in Wheathampstead in August 1893.

By 1901 George and Agnes had moved to a five-roomed house, 2, Chapel Street in Berkhamsted. He was an assistant teacher. They also had another male teacher lodging with them.

In 1911 they were still at the same address and he was an elementary school teacher

Their only child, Reginald Ernest George, was born in 1913.

The 1921 census records that they were still at 2, Chapel Street and that George was employed by HCC at the Victoria Church of England boys’ school.

Agnes died in August 1935 and the 1939 Register shows George still at Chapel Street and retired. He had two lodgers.

George died 23 December 1943 aged 81.
