Biography:
George Tompkins
1861 –1901

George Tompkins died 1901 George Tompkins was born in Chesham in Q4 1861. His father was Stephan Tompkins, an agricultural labourer and his mother’s maiden name was Puddephatt. In 1871, George was a scholar aged 10 years living on Tylers Hill in Chesham with his father Stephan (now widowed) and two siblings:
  • Fred born 1863
  • Sarah A born 1867
In 1894 he married Emily Final from Berkhamsted and in 1901 they were living at 11 Ravens Lane in Berkhamsted. George was an agricultural labourer on Mr Cooper’s farm at Ashlyns Hall.  They had no children. On 25 August 1901, George was walking with his wife Emily along Gravel Path, over the iron bridge towards Berkhamsted when they were both knocked down by a Mr Samuel Matthews, a cyclist who had lost control of his bicycle coming down the hill at great speed.  Emily was unhurt but George had head injuries after hitting his head on the kerb and tragically died as a result.  There was an inquest and the Judge ruled it as an unfortunate accident, with no-one to blame.  George was 39 years old.
