George was born in 1860 in Spraxton, Somerset to James and Martha Welling. His father was a gardener. His mother had been born in Aldbury.
By 1871 his father had died and he was living with mother and younger sister and two brothers at Four Forks, Spraxton. His mother was a grocer, his sister Mary, aged 14, was her shop assistant and brother William, 16, was a gardener.
By 1881 George had moved to Watford where he was employed as a domestic gardener and was lodging in the home of a railway porter and his family.
On May 9 1889 George married Christina Hay in Aldbury, his mother’s home parish. They settled in Aldbury where Naomi (1890), Ivy (1892) and Albert Gordon (1894) were born. The 1901 census shows they were living near The Trooper inn. Christina died in 1907.
In 1911 George was living at 23, Bridge Street, Berkhamsted. He was shown as brother to Head of Household (who was absent). His occupation was given as Jobbing gardener “when I can get it to do.”
He was still there in 1921 with his sister Mary who was Head of Household. He was a domestic gardener for Mr Ward, timber merchant.
George died in August 1923 at 23 Bridge Street aged 63.
