According to the 1851 census Hannah Ball was born in Bledlow, Buckinghamshire in 1811, the daughter of Robert Ball, a labourer. However, she does not appear in the Bledlow records, nor in any other Buckinghamshire parish, and her mother is unknown.

In the 1841 and 1851 Berkhamsted census returns she is shown as the wife of Thomas Matthews, a carpenter, and the couple live in Castle Street. There are no children recorded in the Berkhamsted parish registers for the couple. Hannah’s elderly father Robert Ball was living with them.

Hannah died on 29th May 1865, aged fifty six, and was laid to rest here with her father.
