Harriet Elizabeth Wargent
Unmarked grave Harriet Elizabeth Wargent (née Ketteringham) (1846-1928)
Harriet was born in 1846 in Hayes, Bromley, Kent to John and Ann Harriet (née Sanders) Ketteringham.
In 1851 her father was a coachman and the family were living at Baston House, Hayes, Middlesex. The impressive 10-bedroom house had just been bought by James Fry, Registrar at the Court of Registry.
By 1861 the family had moved to Camberwell. Her father was still a domestic coachman. Harriet, just 13, was described in the census as “domestic servant (out of a place)”.
She married Mark John Wargent in 1870 in Camberwell and in 1871 they were living in Attwell Road, Camberwell. Mark was an “examiner railway”.
John Mark was born in 1873 in Camberwell followed by George E in 1875.
The 1891 census found them at 11, Reedham Street, Peckham. Mark was a railway carriage examiner, son John a railway brake cleaner. George was also at home.
The couple were at the same address in 1901. Mark was still railway carriage examiner. John, a plumber’s mate was living at home, as was 19 year old niece Gertrude Capone, a mother’s help. They also had a boarder.
Not much had changed by the 1911 census. They were still at the same address and Mark was still in the same employment. Harriet was a drapery machinist working from home. John, unmarried and a plumber, was living at home.
Mark died in 1921 and the census for that year shows John and Harriet together at 11, Reedham Street.
Harriet moved to Berkhamsted where she died in December 1928, at “The Nest”, Victoria Road, Berkhamsted aged 82.
Her funeral was conducted by the Baptist minister.
