Biography:
Harriet Holliman
14/06/1864 –1908

Unmarked Grave Harriett Caroline Holliman (1864-1908)

Harriett was born 14 May 1864, probably in Cox Lane, Berkhamsted, the daughter and second child of James Holliman, an agricultural labourer, and Anne (née Meager) his second wife. She was registered as Harriett Caroline.

Her father died in January 1869. Shortly afterwards, on 7 February 1869, she was baptised as Caroline Harriett. (Both names seem to have been used as the first name in records after that but Harriett has been used here to avoid confusion.)

Her mother was left, not only with three children under the age of eight - Thomas James, seven, Harriett, four, and Elizabeth Lily, two - but was also pregnant. Felix Henry was born in July 1869 but tragically died only days later. To add to the family’s grief Anne died in October that year.

Fortunately there were family members who took in the orphaned children, although they were split up. Thomas and Harriett went to live with Amy Meager, their aunt, an unmarried forty year old laundress and Elizabeth Lily went to a cousin and her husband, a baker, in Highgate. Both Elizabeth and Thomas went on to marry and have families.

Harriett never married. She was still living with Amy Meager at 3, Manor Street in 1891 and like her, worked as a laundress. She was recorded there in 1901, head of the household by then and with a lodger.

Harriett died at home aged only 42 in July 1908.
