Harriet was born 22 August 1853 in Frimley, Camberwell, Surrey to Robert and Mercy Brown. According to the baptismal record, her father was a “college servant”.

The 1861 census records the family in Wokingham and Robert as a domestic servant. Harriet had an older sister and a younger sister and brother.

It is very likely that Harriett entered domestic service.

She married Mark Wade, a gardener, in Berkhamsted in September 1877.

Lizzie was born in 1879 in Hemel Hempstead), followed by Jane in 1880 in Berkhamsted.

In  April1891 the family were living in Victoria Road. Arthur Ernest had just been born.

Louisa died in 1891 aged just three. Frank was born in 1894 in Northchurch.

In 1921 Nellie, now recorded as blind, was at home. Mark was employed at St John’s, Chesham Road. Also in the house was Alice Pool, a 16 year old orphan who was employed as a “daily girl” by a Miss Harvey.
