HARRIETT WATERTON: 1829 – 1900

Harriett was born in Berkhamsted on 22nd August 1829 and was baptised on 6th December that year. Her parents were William Waterton, an agricultural labourer, and his wife Eleanor, née Tarbox. The family was large and Harriett was one of eleven children born to William and Eleanor.[1]

Harriett married John Waterton on 16th April 1854. John had been a domestic servant at Castle Hill Farm, Berkhamsted, but later became a railway worker. Harriett and John had seven children: Joseph, 1854 – 1919; James 1856 -1941; William 1859 -1919; Emily Ann 1861-1939; Kate 1864-1954; Elizabeth 1867-1931 and Ellen 1869-1936.

In 1861 the family lived on Berkhamsted’s High Street, but by 1871 they had moved to Park Street and they moved again by 1881 to Cross Oak Road. 

Harriett died on 29th January 1900 at the age of 69 years. Her husband John was buried with her when he died later in 1917.
