Harry was born in Berkhamsted in 1902, the son of John Davis and Alice (née Eames). His father was a chemical factory worker, probably employed by Coopers.
In 1911 the family were living at 6, Manor Street and Harry was the youngest of John and Alice’s five surviving children. The census revealed that in their 27 years of marriage they had lost four of their nine..
His father died in 1915 when Harry was only 13.
In 1921 he was aged 19 and living with his brother-in-law George and sister Ethel and their family at 5, Chesham Road. He is described as “Private in Defence Force” and previously employed as a shop assistant in Robert’s Joinery. The Defence Force was a response by the government in April to the industrial unrest in the mines, recruiting men to cover for striking miners and rail workers. In the event the strike was called off 12 April and the census must have just caught young Harry before he was demobilised again.
In 1923 Harry married Dorothy Gertrude Clark in Berkhamsted and in 1930 they were living at 3, Provident Place.
Harry died in late 1939 aged 37.
