Harry Waller was born April 1874 to Sarah Waller née Mills aged 34 and John Waller aged 34 in Berkhamsted, Herts. Harry was baptised in Berkhamsted 5th April 1874.
According to the 1881 census, Harry aged 7 and then a scholar, was living at 155 High Street, Berkhamsted, with his parents and siblings. Harry’s siblings were: Charles aged 20, working as a labourer, Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ aged 16 who was absent from the family census as she had gained employment as a housemaid at 106 Highfield House for the Hamilton family, Edward ‘Ted’ aged 13, Sarah aged 10 and Kate aged 4 were listed as scholars, Frank aged 2 and Fred aged 4 months. Their father John is recorded working as a gardener.
In 1891, Harry was age 17 and the eldest child living in the family home at 26 Cross Oak Road, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, and was working as a labourer at the local chemical works ‘Cooper’s’, famous for their sheep dip. Harry’s father was working as a fishmonger journeyman, and his mother as a nurse (monthly).
Harry married Caroline (Carrie) Sibley in July 1895 in Berkhamsted when he was 21 years old .Their first child was born in 1897 and named Frank Sibley. A second son followed in the year 1899 named Sidney William.
During 1901 Harry lived with his family at 38 George Street, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, where a third son Charles Ernest was born 17th February.
The fourth and last son Cecil Burt, arrived 22nd October 1903.
By 1904 Harry and Caroline’s first daughter named May, was born 27th December, in Berkhamsted. Their second daughter Winnie was born 26th June 1907 in Berkhamsted. The last daughter and child to complete the family arrived on the 5th August 1909 and was named Connie.
According to the 1911 census, Harry Waller lived at 22 George Street, Great Berkhamsted, aged 37 as the head of the household. He was noted as an invalided chemical labourer, presumably from his time spent working with the local sheep dip which contained arsenic. This was thought to have been the cause of certain health conditions among those handling and breathing in the powdered arsenic/sulfur formula, which was manufactured and owned by ‘Cooper’s’. A friend of the family remembers Harry having cancer at the time of his employment.
The rest of the family were listed as follows: Harry’s wife Caroline, aged 35, Frank, aged 13, worked as a butcher’s assistant in London, Sidney, aged 11, Charles, aged 10, Cecil, aged 8, May aged 6, Winnie aged 3 and Connie aged 1. All the children were attending school except baby Connie.
