HENRY COOK 1852 - 1905
Henry Cook was born in January 1852. He was christened on 11th May 1856. His father was also named Henry and in 1861 was working as a labourer. His mother, Sarah, née Cheney, was a widow at the time of her marriage to Henry Cook. She had previously been married to Henry Sills, with whom she had four children. Henry Sills died in 1847. Two of her sons from her earlier marriage, Stephen and William Sills, were living with their mother, step-father and their half-brother Henry in 1861. The family lived in Red Lion Yard, a very poor part of Berkhamsted.
Henry’s mother died in 1869 and in 1871 Henry was still living in Red Lion Yard, but was then with his father in the home of his half-brother Stephen Sills, together with Stephen’s wife Elizabeth and their 7 year old daughter Jane Sills. Henry, like his father, worked as a general labourer.
Henry married Mary Jane Hill during the second quarter of 1881 and their first child, Henry William, was born in 1882, but sadly he did not survive infancy. The couple had five more children Alfred James, Florence May (who only lived for three years), Henry John, Florence and Maud Elizabeth.
By 1891 Henry was working as a groom and had escaped from Red Lion Yard; in both 1891 and 1901 the family was living in Mill Street, Berkhamsted. Henry was only 54 years old when he died in June 1905. At the time of his death his address was recorded as Kitsbury Road.
