HENRY GATES: 1837 - 1902
Henry Gates was born in Berkhamsted on 16th May 1837, to Henry Gates and Sarah Gates, née Richardson. He had four siblings, William, born 1828; Charlotte,1831 -1892; John, 1833 -1834; Thomas; 1835 – 1837, (both John and Thomas are buried in Rectory Lane Cemetery) and one half-sibling James Thorn, 1845-1872.
Henry’s father died around the same time as his two brothers, possibly from the same disease. His mother married William Thorn, who appears to have had a wife already, ended up in the Union Workhouse in Berkhamsted where she died as a pauper in 1872. She is buried in Rectory Lane Cemetery.
Henry married Ellen Brooks in April 1857 and they had six children, Alfred 1859; Emma 1861-1926; two more children who died as infants, Sarah, 1862, and Henry/Harry 1867. Ellen was born in 1870-1939 then another Henry/Harry was born in 1872 -1951.
Henry was a labourer and the family lived in Bridge Street. Emma, their daughter, was still living at home in 1901.
Henry died in 1902 and is buried in Rectory Lane Cemetery. Even though Ellen his wife was four or five years Henry’s senior, she didn’t die until 1906 and was buried with him in Rectory Lane Cemetery.
