Henry was born in 1877 in Gilston, Herts to Stephen and Alice (née Young) Mansfield. Both his parents had been born in Essex and Stephen was a gardener’s labourer.

In 1891 Henry was 14 and was employed as a “gardener’s boy”, probably working alongside his father.

He married Louisa Jane Gillies, born in Islington, in 1900 in Dartford.

They were to have three children: Harry (1902), James (1903) and Ethel (1905) – all born in Belvedere, Erith, Kent.

By 1911 the family had moved to 48, Kitsbury Road and Henry was a nursery foreman employed by Lane & Co.

In 1921 Henry was still nursery foreman. Harry was a boot repairer and James and Ethel had office jobs with John Dickinson at Apsley Mills.

Young Harry died in 1924 aged 22 and is buried here.

Henry died 10 November 1936 in West Herts Hospital aged 59.
