Henry was born 11 September 1879 in Berkhamsted, the first child of Henry Thomas Gent, a boat builder from Braunton, Northamptonshire and Martha Maria (née Middleton), from Greenhill, Harrow, Middlesex.
He was baptised at St John the Baptist, Greenhill in December 28 that year. Henry was to have nine younger siblings all of whom reached adulthood.
In 1891 the family were living in Bridge Street, conveniently close to the canal for Henry snr.’s work. By 1901 they had moved to 6, Station Road and Henry and his brothers Albert and Walter had joined their father building canal boats.
12 October 1902 Henry married Annie Rance in Harrow parish church. His occupation was given as “Carpenter”. Their son Henry Thomas (Harry) was born 19 March 1903 in Berkhamsted
By 1911 the family was living at 10, Ellesmere Road. Henry was a carpenter working for a builder. Perhaps the demise of the canal transport system, and with it the need for his family’s traditional skills, was already becoming clear.
The 1921 census reveals his employer – he was a carpenter working for H & J Matthews, builders. At home was Harry (b 1903 Berkhamsted), an out of work litho printer, and Henry Williams brother Arthur Edward who was employed by the Co-Op as a grocery shop assistant
Annie died on 29 January 1935 at 5 Castle Street aged 57.
Henry remained at Castle Street and in 1939 was living there with his son, daughter-in-law and grandson.
He died 29 October 1945 and was buried here with Annie. Harry, who died in 1966, lies here with them.
