Herbert Fisher

Unmarked grave Herbert Arthur Fisher (1872-1918)

Herbert was born 18 February 1872 in Berkhamsted, the second son of William and Elizabeth (née Draper) Fisher. His father was a groom. He was baptised 11 August at St Peters.

In 1881 the family were living in Upper Kitsbury Road and William was described in the census as “Gentleman’s servant”. Two daughters older than Herbert were at home, and one younger. Herbert had two younger brothers.

Herbert never married.

On 19 August 1890 he became a porter with the London and North Western Railway Company. His height is recorded in the company’s ledgers as 5’6”.

The census for 1891 records him as a lodger in the home of a railway signalman in Widnes. However on 22 August 1897 he was dismissed for reasons that were not included in the record and by March 1901 Herbert, by then aged 29, was back living at home with his parents and a younger brother and sister at 12, Middle Road. His father had become a house painter and Herbert was a plasterer’s labourer.

The 1911 census records him visiting a family in Waldstone, by which time he was a gardener’s labourer.

He died in May 1918 in the Berkhamsted Union Infirmary aged 46.
