Unmarked grave: Herbert Sinclair Cox (1935-1942)

Herbert was born 22 October 1935 to Arthur S and Kathleen E Cox.

At the time of the 1939 Register they were living at 89, Foundling Hospital Close and Arthur was employed as a stoker at the hospital, presumably working with the boilers.

Herbert died aged 6 at Cell Barns Colony, St Albans in March 1942. The Colony was the first incarnation of what became Cell Barns Hospital which closed in 1998. It had opened in 1933 to accommodate 650 “mentally handicapped” patients, at a time when no clear distinction was drawn between those with mental health problems and those with learning difficulties.

Little Herbert was buried 10 March 1942.
