Herbert was born in 1868 in Berkhamsted, the son of Ellen Winfield.

He was baptised 12 January 1870. No father is shown in the record and it is not clear whether this is because Ellen was not actually married or whether his father was dead.

By 2 April 1871 Ellen is recorded as a widow on the census and Herbert was living with his mother and older brother Arthur in Canal Side, Berkhamsted.

In 1881 he was living with widow Ann Halsey, a laundress, in the High Street. His relationship with her is not shown on the census return where he is marked as “Orphan”.

Herbert died in Missenden Road, Chesham in December 1909 aged 40.
