Horace was born 14 June 1875 in Berkhamsted to Joseph Gudgin and Esther (née Thornton) and the family lived in Holliday Street.
His father, a tailor, died in April 1879 and in the 1881 census his mother was a confectioner in the High Street supporting her daughter and three sons, aged from 12 to 2. Her brother-in-law John Gudgin, a bricklayer, was living with the family which must have helped.
The family moved to 18, Kitsbury Road and in 1901 Horace was a railway goods clerk living with his mother and his brother Leonard, an assistant master at the board school. There was a lodger, a young confectioner who may have been running the business for Esther.
