Horace WOOLMAN

Horace WOOLMAN was born 01/11/1880 at Great Brington, Northamptonshire, very close to Althorp House, the home of the Spencer family.  He was baptised later that month and his parents were William Gibbins and Louisa WOOLMAN. William was a shoemaker, and Horace was the second of their five children.

The 1891 census shows that, when he was 10 years old, the family had a man called John THREADGOLD living next door in Great Brington and he worked as a Plate Layer for London and Northwestern Railway company. He may well have influenced the young boy next door to become interested in the newer railway industry rather than the more traditional occupation of his father.

On 9th September 1895, aged nearly 15, Horace joined London and Northwestern Railways, starting as an Apprentice at Berkhamsted Station, Goods Department on 14 shillings a month. He had taken lodgings at 5, Park Street in Berkhamsted where he lived with four other young boarders in the household of Job and Caroline DORRELL.

His working life then took him via Luton Goods Yard to Wolverhampton Goods Yard with his salary rising to £50 a year by the time he was 21.

By the age of 26 Horace had met Amy GROVES, a young woman from a large Berkhamsted family. They married in the town in the first half of 1907.

By 1911 the couple had left Berkhamsted and never returned here to live. They set up home at 46 Yarmouth Road, Watford and Horace was described in the census as a Railway Clerk.

The 1921 census shows them still living at 46 Yarmouth Road, Watford, he is now aged 40 and is a railway clerk working at the Goods Drilling Office in Camden, North London. So he must have been commuting to his job by train from Watford. By this time the couple had an 8-year-old son Clifford Groves WOOLMAN, who was born and educated in Watford.

Horace remained a Railway Clerk for the rest of his working life, in1939 still living at 46 Yarmouth Road, Watford with Amy and their unmarried son Clifford.

Horace WOOLMAN died on 15th December 1958, aged 78. The Probate Register gives his address as 46 Cassio Road, Watford, with probate granted to his son Clifford Groves WOOLMAN, sales representative, £10,637.

Amy had died in January 1958, leaving Horace a widower for only ten months. She had been buried alongside her sister Annie in Plot 1050 of Rectory Lane cemetery back in Berkhamsted and that is where Horace was also laid to rest.
