Isabella was born in Berkhamsted in 1846, the second of the three daughters of George East, a hoop maker, and Mercy (née Bunker), a “Tuscan plaiter” (ie a straw plaiter producing a particular type of specialist plait).

In 1851 the family were living in the High Street. By 1861 when Isabella was 14, George was a labourer. Isabella lived at home and was employed as a straw plaiter, as was her younger sister.

By the time of the 1871 census Isabella and her younger sister Mathilda were living together in Park Street, both of them earning their living as straw plaiters.

In 1878 Isabella married Jabez Cook, a miller. They lived in Park Street and had a boarder.

Isabella was not at home on the night of the 1891 census and her whereabouts has not been established.

Isabella died in March 1901 at home in Bourne End Mill aged 54 and was buried 9 March.

Jabez remarried to Elizabeth Bedford in 1906. He died in 1912 and was buried here with Isabella.
