Frederick Loader was the sixth child of Frederick Loader, an Inn Keeper and Tailor from a Berkhamsted family and Mary née East, who was originally from Chesham. By the time of his birth, the family lived in The Castle Inn in Castle Street, Berkhamsted.
Frederick had three older sisters: Emma, born in 1836, Sarah, born in 1837 and Margaret born in 1840 and two older brothers: Robert, born in 1842 and John William, born in late 1844 or early 1845. All three of the boys together with their sisters Sarah and Margaret were baptised at St Peter’s Berkhamsted on 14th June 1847.
Frederick died as an infant in December 1847. The Burial Register for St Peter’s Berkhamsted records that Frederick Loader aged 7 months was buried on 29th December by Stephen Lea Wilson, Curate of St Peter’s.
Frederick was one of two infant sons commemorated on his mother Mary’s headstone, though not by name. The relevant part of the inscription read: “Also two sons of the above who died in their infancy”.
The other infant son commemorated, also named Frederick after their father, was born on 19th December 1848 and buried in this cemetery on 2nd March 1850.
Their mother Mary Loader died aged 36 in February 1851, having recently given birth to a third son named Frederick, who survived. She was buried in this plot on 28th February 1851.
After the loss of his wife and two infant sons, Frederick Loader Senior, aged 39, with his children Sarah, 16, Robert, 11, John W, 8 and Frederick, 3 left the Port of London aboard the ship Sir Robert Peel on 26th July 1854 bound for New York to start a new life in America.
