JABEZ COOK; 1851 – 1912
Jabez was born in July 1851 to Maria and Thomas Cook. The family lived in Picotts End, Hemel Hempstead, where Jabez’ father worked as a miller at Noak Mill. Jabez was the second of eight children born to Thomas and Mary.[1]
In 1861 the family had moved to Hemel Hempstead’s High Street and Thomas was working as a corn and flour dealer, but ten years later by 1881, the family had moved to Amersham and Thomas was then working as a baker.[2] Jabez, then 18 years old had begun working as a miller, as his father had originally been.
We know from a court case in which Jabez gave evidence in 1889 that he had then been working as a miller at Upper Mill, Mill Street, Berkhamsted for 14 years, i.e. since 1875. Jabez married Isabella East in Berkhamsted in October 1878 and in 1881 he and Isabella were living in Park Street, Berkhamsted. Jabez continued working as a miller. Isabella died in March 1901. They had no children and had been married 22 years.
In 1901 he had moved from Berkhamsted He was living in the Mill Cottage (the Lodge) Bourne End and was still working as a miller, no doubt at the mill in Bourne End. In 1906 he married Elizabeth Bedford and by 1911 they had moved to Berkhamsted and lived in Kitsbury Road with his wife’s brother George, a farm foreman. Jabez was then 59 and still working as a miller.
