Rectory Lane Cemetery, Berkhamsted

Biography:
James Courtnall
1841 –1889

Unmarked grave James Courtnall (1841-1889)

James was born in Berkhamsted in 1841 and was baptised in St Peter’s 26 December that year. His father was James Courtnall. His mother Susan (née Webden) was a charwoman. His father had died by 1861 when James, aged 19 and employed as a bricklayer, was living with his mother and sister in the High Street.

He married Emma (née Flint) in 1863. Emma was the daughter of William Flint, another bricklayer, so this was presumably how the young couple met.

In 1871 they were living in the High Street with Albert (b.1863), Ann (b.1867) and Kate (b.1870).

Emma died in 1880 and lies in an unmarked grave in this cemetery. By the time of the 1881 census James had moved to George Street, Sunnyside. Living with him were Albert, now working with him as his bricklayer’s labourer, Ann, Alice (b. 1874) and Sarah (b. 1877). The girls were still at school.

James died in October 1889 aged 47 and was buried on the 31st.
