James was born in Berkhamsted in 1814, the son of Sarah and Thomas Green. He was baptised in St Peter’s 18 September that year.

He became a labourer and married Martha Tarbox in Berkhamsted 31 July 1836. William was born in 1837 but died in April 1841. It is likely that he is buried in this cemetery.

In 1841 they were living in Waterside, Berkhamsted but had moved to Castle Street by 1851. James was to remain there for the rest of his long life. Their family consisted of Sarah (1841), Ellen (1844), William (1847) and Emily (1849).

Charles was born in 1852. By 1861 James had become a gardener. In the 1871 census only Charles, an apprentice coach builder, was at home with his parents and by 1881 James and Martha were living alone. James, aged 67, was still working as a gardener, as he was ten years later.

James died at home aged 88 in June 1902. Martha survived him until 1903. It is likely that she is buried in this cemetery although her grave has not been identified.
