Plot 18 James Matthews (1814-1882)

James was born in Berkhamsted in 1814 to Thomas and Elizabeth Matthews. He was baptised in St Peter’s 14 August that year.

James became a carpenter like his father and in 1841 was living with his parents in Castle Street, where he appears to have lived for the rest of his life.

He married Harriet Baker in Northchurch 20 February 1847 and their daughter Emma was born in 1848.

Thomas was born in early 1851, but Harriet died in March that year, very likely in childbirth or as a result of complications following it. She was only 33.

The census for March 30 that year shows James, with the baby and little Emma, living in Castle Street. His unmarried sister Ann had moved in to act as housekeeper.

James married again, to Mary Jane Salisbury, ten years his junior, on 30 October 1858, in St Margaret’s, Westminster. Their son Henry was born in 1860.

In 1861 they were living in Castle Street with the baby and his daughter Emma and he is described as “Carpenter, master”.

James jnr. was born in 1862 and Charles in 1865.

In 1871 the census records that James was working in partnership with his brother.

By 1881 James was a builder employing 14 men and 4 boys. Sons Henry and James were carpenters and Charles was a clerk.

James died 1 July 1882 aged 67 at Castle Street.

Mary Jane survived him until 1902 and is buried here with him. Their son Henry is buried in Plot x53.
