James was born in Berkhamsted in 1852 to Robert, a carter, and Rebecca Rance. He was baptised in St Peter’s 27 May 1855.
In 1861 he was living with his widowed mother, his married brother and his wife and child and his brother Jabez in Ellesmere Road.
Ten years later he was a labourer at the canal coal wharf and living with his mother in Ellesmere Road.
James became a railway labourer and the 1881 census records him as a visitor to the Philbey family in Ramsey, Essex.
His daughter Blanche was born in 1886 in Berkhamsted, the daughter of Alice Gertrude Westley. The child was registered as Rance. He and Alice married in Southampton in 1888 and son Joseph was born in 1889 in Southampton. In 1891 the family lived in Middle Road, Berkhamsted and James worked as a timber carter.
Sons James (1892), Alexander (1895), Herbert (1898) and Edward (1900) were all born in Berkhamsted.
The 1901 census records the family at 8, Middle Row. Janes was still a timber carter and Alice was a laundress, assisted by Blanche.
James died in January 1903 in Middle Road, Kitsbury, aged 50.
His brothers Jabez and Joseph are buried in this cemetery.
