James was born on 24th July 1863 in Berkhamsted to James (labourer) and Ellen Rose.
By the time of the 1871 census, now aged 7, he was living in Eddy Street, Northchurch with his father, mother and older brother William. Also there were Daniel and Noah Daniels (labourers lodging there).
Ten years later in 1881, at age 18 he is working as a day labourer, still living at Eddy Street with his parents, brother William, a general labourer, and Harry, a farm labourer. His father is now a bricklayer.
On 17th September 1887 he married Harriet Duncombe so by the time of the 1891 census he was head of his own household and living in Northchurch High Street with their first son Harry. His widowed father James was living with them, at 64 and an agricultural labourer.
1901 census: 10 years later and his family had expanded to include Harry 11, Lilly 8, William 6, twin girls Daisy and Jane 4, Ellen 3. They were now living at 20 Cross Oak Road, Berkhamsted.
In the 1911 census the family members had changed a little, the oldest Harry was not resident at the time but Lilly 18, William 16, one of the twins Daisy 14 (but not Jane), Elizabeth 12, Nellie 10, Mable 8, Alfred 6 and finally Edith 3. There was no sign of Ellen who would have been 13.
On 6th April 1920 James died and was buried in Rectory Lane Cemetery.
