Unmarked plot James William Stanborough Chamberlain (1887-1940)

James was born 23 March 1887 in Wandsworth, the son of Gilbert Stanborough Chamberlain, a soldier.

He married Laurie Eliza McCausland on 27 September 1913 at St Philip’s church, Battersea. He was a tram conductor, she was a “chemical assistant”. Both were living at 14, Robertson Street at the time of the wedding.

James joined the Army 4 June 1915 and his attestation papers give us a few physical details: 5 foot 5 ½ inches tall with a scar on his left temple. He served in the Royal Field Artillery. The paperwork is severely damaged but it seems that James was discharged 27 June 1919, fit and well.

His permanent address on discharge was given as 227, High Street, Berkhamsted.

His son Frederick was born 1915 in Clapham and his daughter Irene Daisy in 1920 in Stockwell.

In 1921 Census he was living with his wife, children, widowed mother-in-law Eliza McCausland and his sister-in-law at 16, Highfield Road, Berkhamsted. He was a stock keeper for Anglodol  Ltd chemical works, a branch of Coopers.

In the 1939 Register he and Laurie were living at 8, Manor Street and he was working as a sheep dip packer, presumably for Coopers. He was also an air raid warden.

James died 20 November 1940 West Herts Hospital aged 53. He was buried 25 November.

His mother-in-law Eliza McCausland is buried in this cemetery in an unmarked grave.
