James Willis
1848 –1912

Unmarked grave James Willis (1848-1912)

James was born in 1848 in Berkhamsted to labourer Thomas J Willis and his wife Mary (née Paxton).

In 1851 he and his elder brother John lived with their parents in Back Lane, Berkhamsted.

James never married and in 1871 he was living with his parents and brother John, a groom, at Canal Side. His father was a farrier’s labourer.

In 1881 he was living with his widowed mother, a laundress, brother John and a lodger at Canal Side.

By 1891 he living with his mother, still a laundress, brother John and a lodger in Victoria Road.

In 1901 he was a lodger at 58, Castle Street.

In April 1911 he was an inmate in the Union workhouse, as was his brother John. He was described as a general labourer.

It is not known whether he remained in the workhouse, but he died in June 1912 in its Infirmary, aged 64.

His father Thomas and his brother John are both buried in this cemetery.
