Unmarked grave Jane Ghost (née Ashwell) (1838-1900)

Jane was born in Hemel Hempstead, the fourth and last child of labourer William Ashwell and his wife Ellen (née Philpott). She had two older brothers and an older sister.

Her father died in January 1840 and her mother married James Ginger, a shoe maker, the following year. The family lived in King’s Arms Yard off the High Street in Hemel Hempstead.

By 1851 two sons and two daughters had been born to James and Ellen and the whole extended family had moved to Leverstock Green near Hemel Hempstead.

In 1867 Jane married Richard Ghost, a labourer, in Berkhamsted. Their first child, Annie, was born in early 1870, but sadly died the same year.

In 1871 the couple were living in Castle Street where Jane would remain for the rest of her life. Their second child, Jane, was born in 1874. Jane took in laundry to supplement the family income.

Richard died in 1887. Jane survived him until April 1900 when she died in Castle Street aged 62.
