Plot 883 Jane Margrave (née Crook) (1852-1947)

Jane was born 25 March 1852 in Hawridge, Bucks, out of wedlock. Her mother’s first name and her father’s identity have not been discovered. In 1861 she and her sister (or half-sister) Catherine were living with their grandparents James and Peggy Collins in New Mill, Tring, so it is possible that their father’s surname was Collins.

In 1871 Jane living with her widowed aunt Mary Ann Margrave (née Collins), a shop and beer house keeper, and her sons James, a canal boat builder, and William, a carpenter, in The Old Boot, Castle Street, Berkhamsted. She married William Margrave, apparently her cousin, in 1882.

From at least 1891 the family lived at 6, Castle Street. The couple were to have five children:

Ethel Caroline (1883), Frank (1885), Gilbert (1888), Leonard James (1891) and Ernest (1893).

By 1911 William was an invalid and unable to work. Ethel (a teacher), Gilbert (a chemical machinist) and Ernest (a bookseller’s assistant) were living at home.

William died January 1919 at 6, Castle Street

The 1921 census records Jane still in Castle Street with Ethel (an elementary school teacher) and Leonard (employed by gents’ hosiery company).

By the time of the 1939 Register she living with Ethel at 6, Castle Street.

Jane died 24 December 1947.
