Jemima Costin

Plot x248 Jemima Costin (née Ellingham) (1775-1864)

Jemima was born in 1775 in Stanbridge, Beds, and baptised there 24 June. She was the daughter of Daniel and Martha Ellingham.

She married William Costin, an agricultural labourer, in Edlesborough 30 October 1806 and by 1812 when their son Daniel was born the couple had moved to Berkhamsted. They were living on Berkhamsted Common at the time of the 1841 Census.

In the 1851 Census Jemima was recorded as a “retired lace maker” living on Berkhamsted Common with her granddaughters Charlotte and Harriet. She is shown as married, but William does not appear.

William died in 1858 and is buried here.

In 1861 the widowed Jemima was still living on Berkhamsted Common with her granddaughter Harriet, who was described as “servant”. Jemima was a “proprietor of houses.”

She died 22 September 1864 aged 89 and was laid to rest here with William.

Daniel, their son, died in 1855 and is buried in an unmarked grave in this cemetery.
