Plot 960 Jesse Philbey (1865-1968)
Jesse was born around 1865 in Pitstone to single mother Bethia Philbey, a straw plaiter.
His mother married saw sharpener Edwin Hadaway in 1869.In 1871 they were living in Eddy Street, Northchurch and his half-sister Laura had just been born. In 1881 he was still with his parents and was employed as a general labourer
Jesse married Louisa Pooley in late 1885 and Alfred W was born in 1887.
In 1891 they were living at 3, Cross Oak Road. Jesse had become a saw sharpener like his step-father. Arthur Ernest had just been born but apparently not yet named – he appears on the census return as “Infant”, aged one month. Jesse’s widowed father-in-law was living with them.
By 1911 they family had moved to Whelply Hill near Bovingdon and Jesse was a saw sharpener working for a timber merchant.
Arthur died 5 March 1915 at Whelply Hill aged just twenty. It was to be a sad year for the family as Sylvia Louisa Mary, the first child of son Alfred and his wife Ellen died in late August aged just two years. She is recorded in the burials register and is likely to be the burial in this cemetery recorded only as “Philbey” in the burials record.
At the time of the 1921 census Louisa and Jesse were visiting their son Alfred, a chauffeur-gardener, his wife and family in Chalfont St Giles.
Before the 1939 Register Jesse and Louisa had moved back to Berkhamsted and were living at 13, Park Street. Jesse had retired.
Louisa died 15 August 1949.
Jesse survived her until 6 August 1968, dying at the grand age of 103.
His grandmother Sarah Philbey (1799-1879) is buried in this cemetery.
