Plot 495 John Crossley (1851-1935)

John was born in 1851 in the hamlet of Ireland, near Southill, Beds, the son of James Crossley and Ann (née Warren). His father was an agricultural labourer.

By the time of the 1871 census his father had died. His mother, a lace maker, lived at the Lodge Gate in Southill with her daughter Eliza, a straw plaiter and John, who although 19, is not shown as having any occupation.

John became a carpenter and moved to London. He married Susan Foot at St Saviour’s church, St Pancras 4 May 1878. His residence was given as 183, Drummond Street.

Their daughter Minnie Eliza, was born in Hemel Hempstead 21 February 1886. By the time of the 1891 census the family had moved to 14, Cowper Road. John was employed as a carpenter and joiner. John was to live at that address for the rest of his life.

The 1911 census reveals that John was self-employed. Minnie had left home. In 1921, aged 70, John was still working as a “jobbing carpenter”.

Susan died 4 October 1922 and was buried here. John survived her until 1 January 1935 when he died at home aged 83 and was laid to rest with her on 4 January.

Their daughter Minnie, who never married, died in 1972 and was also buried here.
