John Jones (131)
Sacred to the memory of John JONES who departed this life 12 November 1854 aged 73 years. Susana JONES who departed this life 21 November 1873 aged 81 years
John JONES John Jones was born in about in the early 1780s in a tiny village called Llangattock in Monmouthshire on the Welsh/English border.
In 1799, when John would have been about 17, he was probably apprenticed to a joiner called John HERBERT in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, 5 miles from Llangattock Lingoed. He spent the rest of his working life as a carpenter. There is no knowing what brought him to Berkhamsted.
John married Susana, a girl from Iver in Bucks. The couple set up home in Little Gaddesden by 1813. Between 1813 and 1835 they had ten children.
By 1851 he and his wife Susan (sic) were living at Prospect Place in Berkhamsted with their 16-year-old son, Richard. John is described as a retired carpenter. Richard was born in Berkhamsted so the couple had certainly been in the town by 1835.
According to his gravestone, John died, aged 73 on 12th November 1854.
An interesting footnote to John’s life is that his son Richard and at least three of his grandsons, Edward, Frank and William all became carpenters, following in his footsteps.
