JOHN LEWIS STRANGE: 1868 - 1930

John Lewis Strange was born in Calne, Wiltshire, in July 1868 to Alfred (1835-1905) and Elizabeth Strange, née Gale, (1833-1911). He had 6 siblings: Emma Louisa, 1857-1945; Frederick William, 1859-1933; Myra Leah, 1861-1941; Beatrice Kate, 1863-1947; Francis Enos, 1873-1950 and Alice Elizabeth, 1875-1902.

In 1881 John was living in Wiltshire and was a labourer. in 1891 he was single and living in Lower Stanton, Stratton St Margaret, on his own means. He trained to be a baker and married Ellen Elizabeth Lack (1875-1951) from Norfolk on 15 May 1898. By 1901 the couple had moved to 286 High Street, Berkhamsted and they had their first child, Florence (1900-2000). By 1911 they had two more children, Alfred Frederick (Fred), 1903-1962, and Arthur Sidney, 1905-1971. In 1912 their daughter Edith Maud was born. She died in 2005.

In 1921 John Lewis was 53 and had an established bakery business in the High Street. His children all worked for John Dickinsons paper mill in Apsley

John died aged 63 and was buried in Rectory Lane Cemetery 29 September 1930.

His wife Ellen survived him by 21 years and moved to 342a High St Berkhamsted. She died on 29 November 1951 and was buried in Wooton Bassett Wiltshire.
