John Orchard
1866 –06/05/1946

John Orchard was born to Thomas and Mary Orchard in Nether Winchendon in Buckinghamshire in 1866.

In 1881 he was a fifteen year old agricultural labourer, living at Manor Farm, Lower Winchendon, with  his parents and siblings.

In 1891, in Berkhamsted he was a groom; in 1901, a coachman at Horseheath Lodge, and in 1911 a ‘cab driver for a job master’, back in Berkhamsted.

Horseheath Lodge is a substantial country house, built in the early 19th century, with owners with close connections with horse racing. In 1901 there was a substantial household, including a butler, and two grooms: the owners are not recorded on the census.

John died at his daughter’s home in 51 Baker Street, Luton, of heart disease, on 7 May 1946, aged 80
