John Penny
1845 –1927

Unmarked grave John Penny (1845-1927)

John was born in 1845 in Redbourn, Herts to Dorcas (née Draper) and Thomas Penny.

By 1851 his father had died. Fortunately two of John’s older brothers were adult and were employed as agricultural labourers and even their eleven year old brother was working with them.

John became a labourer and his two sisters were straw plaiters for the Luton and Dunstable hat trade.

John married Caroline Rackley in 1868 in Hemel Hempstead and Arthur (1869), Annetta (1870), Ellen (1876) and Alice (1879) were all born in the town.

By 1881, when Daisy was born, they had moved to the High Street, Northchurch where May (1884) and Newland (1886) were born.

They were at the same address in 1891. John was described in the census as “Master milkman” and son Arthur as a milkman.

By 1911 John was employed as a jobbing gardener.

In 1921 he and Caroline were living 27, Cross Oak Road and he was employed as a domestic gardener in Shootersway.

John died in June 1927 aged 82 at 27, Cross Oak Road. Caroline survived him until 1928 and is buried in this cemetery.
