John was born in 1839 in Cuddington, Bucks, to William Robbins, a carrier, and his wife Elizabeth. Cuddington is a village about six miles south west of Aylesbury.
By 1861 he was working as a groom at Pullers Farm, Fleet Marston, employed by Warwickshire-born John Ledbrooke who was farming 311 acres.
John married Martha Ayres from Oving 19 May 1862 at Fleet Marston, Bucks, just north west of Aylesbury.
John William was born in 1862, followed by George (1865) and William and Edward (1867), all born in Oving.
By March 1868 the family had moved to Berkhamsted where sadly little Edward died that year. He is buried in this cemetery. Elizabeth was born 1869, then Frederick (1871), Arthur (1873), Mary Emma (1879) and Francis (1880).
In the 1881 census the family was living in Upper Kitsbury Road and John was working as a butcher.
Ernest, the final child, was born in 1882.
By 1891 the family lived at Bulbourne, Tring and John was a gardener and in 1901 he was a “domestic gardener” living at 10, Myrtle Cottages, Tring.
By 1911 he was a patient in the Berkhamsted Union infirmary. Whether he remained there, or moved in and out of its care is not known, but he died there in January 1913 aged 76.
