John was born 29 June 1891 to Annie Elizabeth Dyer, a single mother. His father’s name is unknown, although possibly it was King – he is referred to in one record as John William King Dyer and in another as John William K Dyer. He was baptised at St Peter’s on 9 September.
His mother was the daughter of Maria Dyer who had married a second time to Richard Blacknell, a Berkhamsted labourer, and in 1901 John was living with Maria and Richard. It is not known what became of his mother.
John became a postal sorter and married Marianne Hawkins (born 1889), a tailoress, in 1922 in Woolwich.
In the 1939 Register the couple were living at 40, Hazel Road. John was shown as retired, despite his relatively young age, so possibly he was already suffering from some illness or disability that was the cause of his death at only 49.
He was buried 4 December 1940.
