Joseph was born 26 April 1873 in Battersea, London, the son of Alfred, a labourer, and Caroline (née Pywell) Cornell. He had two older brothers and an older sister.

By 1874 the family had moved to Derbyshire and Joseph was baptised 3 October 1878 at St Alkmund, Derby. Eventually Joseph was to have another four brothers and four more sisters.

By 1881 the Cornells were living in the parish of Ockwell, just outside Derby, and Alfred was working at a colour works.

The 1891 census shows that the family had moved to Evington, just outside Leicester. Alfred was still working as a labourer and Joseph, aged 17, and his older brother Alfred jnr., were strikers at a smith’s forge. Their grandparents were living with the family making a household of thirteen people.

On Christmas Day 1895 Joseph married Eliza Sarah Pywell, his cousin, at St Paul’s, Herne Hill, Surrey. Joseph’s occupation was given as labourer. The couple were to have no children.

In 1901 they were living at 15, Blucher Road, West Dulwich. They were still there in 1911. Joseph was a fitter at the gas works and they had a boarder.

By the time of the 1921 census they had moved to 3, Embleton Road, Lewisham and Joseph was employed as a boiler fireman. They were still at that address in 1939 when Joseph was described as a retired fitter’s labourer

It has not been possible to discover why Joseph should have been in the Hemel Hempstead registration district at the time of his death or why he was buried in Berkhamsted in 1943.

Eliza survived him until 1955 and is buried in Bromley.
